REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES Several studies have been conducted here and abroad which have a direct and indirect bearing on the subject to be investigated in this study. A brief review of the related literature and studies are presented hereunder. Literature In the present educational system, studies based on the achievement levels of elementary and secondary students revealed that the equality of education has deteriorated over the years. In a recent UNESCO statistics Barsaga (2000) noted that Filipinos are among the most schooled in the developing countries, yet in comparative international tests measuring academic achievement, the Philippines ranks among the lowest in the developing countries. He furthers noticed that in†¦show more content†¦Parents’ educational attainment is also an important factor that affects either positively or negatively the achievement of high school students. It has been generally accepted that the higher the educational attainment of parents has the more active and effective they are in the society in any field of endeavor. It cannot be denied that if the parents’ educational attainment is high, there is a greater tendency that their children will be challenged to outdo their parents i n terms of education. Sociologist Hurlock accepted that successful children usually came from educated parents. Studies Jose (1992), in her study found out that gender can be a good predictor of mathematics achievement. She further noted that female students got better scores than the male respondents. This was supported by Gomez when she found in her study that gender significantly influenced the mathematical ability level of high and low achievers in mathematics. Aure (1992) found out that students’ socio-economic status as measured by their parents’ occupation and family income was significantly associated with students’ mathematics learning.
